Building on the Legacy of ITWales, we held our annual International Women’s Day Celebration event on Wednesday 8 March 2023.
International Women’s Day is a global day celebrating the economic, political and social achievements of women past, present and future. Annually, thousands of events are held throughout the world to inspire women and celebrate achievements. A global web of rich and diverse local activity connects women from all around the world including political rallies, business conferences, government activities and networking events.
Despite the heavy snow, our annual International Women’s Day gala dinner went ahead, welcoming over 250 guests to the celebration. The evening has become a regular feature on the Welsh social calendar, with guests travelling from all parts of the country to attend.
This year was the 23rd anniversary of the event which focuses on women in STEM, and we celebrated Technocamps’ 20th anniversary. The evening showcased the work being done across Wales to encourage the next generation of scientists, with talks from:
– Astronomer Dr Jen Millard
– Women in Cyber Wales’s Clare Johnson
– Technocamps Alumnus, Casey Hopkins
To start the evening, Dr Jen Millard discussed her experience as a woman in astronomy, “There are not enough women in STEM. It’s getting better… but we’re not there yet.“
Clare Johnson discussed her work as Founder of Women in Cyber Wales, the challenges she has faced as a woman in STEM and the key to being strong and resolute.
Swansea Uni Software Engineering Degree Apprenticeship Programme Director and Senior Lecturer Casey Hopkins then spoke about her unusual route into computer science and how Technocamps has helped her along the way.
