WiST Seminar | Stretching Education

13th November 2023 @ 5:00 pm - 7:00 pm

Graduation hat

We hope you can join us for some light refreshments as we delve into STEM outreach education at Swansea University. The session will celebrate the wide range of amazing outreach that is taking place at the university and beyond. We have inspiring outreach providers to give us an insight into their roles to promote and enthuse young people.

Dr Becky Waldram currently works at Swansea University, as the Impact & Engagement Officer for the SUSTAIN Hub, which focusses on greener, cleaner and smarter steelmaking technologies. Within SUSTAIN, she works with the academic research teams across the Hub’s themes of Carbon Neutral Iron & Steelmaking and Smart Steel Processing to disseminate the research findings to the wider academic and industrial communities.

Becky is also heavily involved in public outreach and engagement across the STEM community, with a particular focus on Materials Science & Engineering. She regularly designs and delivers activities for online and in person delivery in schools and at public events. Recently, Becky has been involved in Cheltenham and Swansea Science Festivals, the national Big Bang Fair at the NEC, and hosting a weekly online science show for the ExpertEd Family outreach programme.

Casey Hopkins currently works at Swansea University as a Senior Lecturer in Computer Science and the Programme Director for Applied Software Engineering BSc Degree Apprenticeship. Casey has been involved with STEM outreach with Technocamps since undertaking her own degree at Swansea. She started as a Teaching Fellow which involved developing and delivering many inspiring and innovative computer science workshops to both primary and secondary pupils, as well as teaching Swansea University students modules on their Applied Software Engineering degree. Within her current role, she continues to engage in STEM outreach through the Degree Apprenticeship and Microcredentials which aims to support the increase of Digital Upskilling throughout Wales.

Technocamps’ WiST events are aimed at women in the technology sector (or with a keen interest in the industry) to learn from other inspirational women and network with like-minded people. All events are entirely free thanks to funding support from the Welsh Government.

This is an in-person event at Technocamps HQ, Floor 2, Margam Building, Singleton Park, Swansea University, SA2 8PP.
