From January to March, we will be running teacher training events, to help you to improve your skills to be able to deliver Computer Science skills from the ‘Computation is the foundation for our digital world’ Description of Learning, from the Science & Technology Area of Learning, as well as skills from the ‘Problem-solving and modelling’ Element of the ‘Data and computational Thinking’ Strand of the Digital Competence Framework.
An Introduction To Scratch Junior And Computing In The Foundation Phase | Date: Thursday 23rd January 2025 or Friday 24th January 2025 (same content on both days) Time: 9 am to 3:30 pm Location: Treforest Campus, University Of South Wales Description: An introduction to the Scratch Junior programming language. Learn about the free application, that can be used to introduce Foundation Phase pupils to programming. You will also learn about different unplugged activities that can be used to teach pupils about computers, without using computers. |

Learn about the free, online tool, that can be used to teach pupils programming skills, by making various programs. You will be introduced to making a quiz and a game, that can both be adapted to fit into different projects, plus other programs. |
An Introduction To BBC micro:bit | Date: Thursday 13th March 2025 or Friday 14th March 2025 (same content on both days) Time: 9 am to 3:30 pm Location: Treforest Campus, University Of South Wales Description: An introduction to BBC micro:bits. Learn about the mini computers that can be programmed to teach pupils programming skills. You will learn how to program the micro:bit to: change its display in different ways; respond to its buttons being pressed; react to its sensors sensing changes; and lots more. |
An Introduction To MakeCode Arcade | Date: Thursday 27th March 2025 or Friday 28th March 2025 (same content on both days) Time: 9 am to 3:30 pm Location: Treforest Campus, University Of South Wales Description: An introduction to the MakeCode Arcade programming language. Learn about the free, online tool, that can be used to teach pupils programming skills, by making arcade-style games. You will be introduced to making and controlling sprites and backgrounds, by creating various games, including platform games. |
For all of the events, refreshments (tea/coffee) will be provided, plus a meal voucher, for lunch in Stils (the USW food court).
